Doorbell replacement Options

If you are seeing to do a front entryway remodel, there are many things to consider. One of the most often over looked items is the doorbell. If you don't consider the doorbell before you start your project, your options can become severely slight when you are nearing task completion. Before you even consider the style and looks that you want for your doorbell button, you need to think about how the doorbell operates.

There are 3 basic types of doorbells with variations on each type. The three types are mechanical doorbells, wired doorbells and wireless doorbells. A mechanical doorbell is one where the visitor turns a knob or pulls a lever and that performance causes a bell to ring. These were the only type of doorbell that existed prior to electric doorbells. The second type is wired doorbells. Most home have the wired kind where there is a wire that provides power to the button and the on or off signal back to the chime unit. The newest types are the wireless ones that run on a signal like your television remote control unit. The advantage with these units is that they can be placed anywhere you want.

With all of the combinations that are available, here is a short list of conversions that work well and some of the tradeoffs connected with each choice.

From Wired to Wired - As long as the button is going to remain in the same place as the traditional and the wires are still in good working order then this is a viable option. Having the power in case, granted via the wires means there aren't any batteries to change.

From Wired to Wireless - You have the increased flexibility of being able to place the new button anywhere you want. You may have to patch the old hole though.

Wireless to wireless - No issues here, you are already doing what you need to get the wireless to work.

Mechanical to mechanical - As long as the same factory hole works for the new bell, you should be good to go. If you want to turn the location, this could be a big deal as in replacing the door itself.

Mechanical to wireless - No issues with the wireless button, but the mounting hole of the mechanical bell will need to be dealt with.
